Dear family

The war has finally ended and the union came out victorious! I told y'all that we would try out hardest and win, We burned Richmond, Virginia to the ground on April 2  and captured 6,000 of general Lee's men which led to the Confedracy's defeat. I'll be back soon but I can't say the same about my brother since he got shot in the leg.

                                 - Love you son, Nelson

Dear Diary,
The Civil War has finally come to the end. After long battles and dreading wars we were able to prevail! I told you that I would help us win!! This past year things have really gone down for the South, and they were just not able to battle us anymore. The soldiers had barely any food and clothing. They were also very sick from lack of nutrients. We had also captured Richmond, therefore putting us in prime winning position. We were basically squeezing the Southerners until they would fall in our trap. We needed a perfect oppurtunity. That happened when the Southerners went to Appomatox Courthouse not realizing that we had completely outsmarted them. When they got there they wanted to get supplies, but little did they know that we had them completely surrounded. When they realized this they had to surrender, because our army was much stronger!!! I knew that we would win the war. God has shown that the righteous side will always prevail.

1865 Post

It’s been a long and gruesome war, but it’s finally over. We surrounded General Lee in Appomattox Courthouse and forced him to surrender. During a short battle I thought nothing would go wrong, but I was wrong and I got shot in the big toe. Man it hurt so much, but I’m glad it was just a toe and not a  leg or arm. Now I can go home and see my siblings again and ask them about what they’ve done for the past five years. I also don’t have to worry about getting shot anymore. During the war I saw so many things that I will never forget about. Most importantly I survived and the only I lost was a toe.

I’m now under the command of Major General William Tecumseh Sherman and I sort of regret my actions during the time known as Sherman’s March. First we took Atlanta a major manufacturing center of the South, then General Sherman ordered us to destroy and set fire to every building we saw in the South. I know were trying to win the war but isn’t destroying and raiding their homes and farms a little too much. The bad thing is that if I didn’t follow orders than I would of been punished. The March is probably going to haunt me for the rest of my life.
